NAVI-gate®

Monitoring membrane integrity using native viruses in water

THE CHALLENGE

Verifying the integrity of membrane filtration processes is a key factor for safeguarding the microbial water quality. Most stringent applications require a Log Removal Value (LRV) 7 or more to be proved, that means a removal of 99.99999%. Conventional methods for integrity monitoring show (1) insufficient sensitivity or (2) require dosing of surrogates to the raw water, which is not acceptable in full-scale systems and/or (3) require system shutdowns.

SOLUTION AND IMPACT

NAVI-gate® uses DNA based techniques to monitor native viruses which are present in the raw water. This highly innovative and patented technique brings major advantages as compared to conventional methods: (1) Only 1 Liter water sample required, (2) No dosing of tracer or surrogate compounds, (3) No interruption of the water treatment process, (4) Wide window of operation, LRV 7 achievable, (5) Validated on surface water treatment sites at full scale, (6) Applicable to other water matrices (e.g. groundwater, seawater, wastewater effluent) and (7) Opening the route to on-site (semi)continuous monitoring.

STATUS

NAVI-gate® is operational at full scale and can be applied to different water types. Typically, each case requires a tailored approach. Interested in NAVI-gate®? We are happy to offer services by the KWR laboratories and/or a support and license package if you wish to use the technique at your own facilities. Just contact us at navi-gate@alliedwaters.com.
